The Disease:

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system, which normally protects the body from foreign substances, mistakenly attacks itself. MG is a weakness and rapid fatigue of muscles under voluntary control. This condition is caused by disruption of communication between nerves and muscles.Symptoms include muscle weakness in the arms and legs, double vision, and difficulty in speaking and chewing. It is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes skeletal muscle weakness that worsens with periods of activity and improves with periods of rest. These muscles are involved in functions related to breathing and movement of body parts such as arms and legs.

Approximately 15-20% of myasthenia gravis patients experience at least one myasthenia crisis. This is a medical emergency that occurs when the muscles that control breathing become weak and you need a ventilator to help you breathe. It can be triggered by infections, stress, surgery, or side effects to medications.

The cause:

It occurs when normal communication between the nerve and muscle is interrupted at the neuromuscular junction.

In many adults with myasthenia gravis, large thymus gland have been observed which ideally should have been reduced small and replaced by fat after puberty. Scientists believe that the thymus can misdirects the developing immune cells they can ultimately cause the immune system to attack its own cells.

Symptoms:

Symptoms include weakness in the arm and leg muscles, double vision and difficulties with speech and chewing.
